From Learning to Confidence

Priya came to S-kala quietly. She sat in the back of the room on the first day, watching the other women pick up fabric and thread with what seemed like natural ease. She did not touch her own materials for the first twenty minutes. "I was scared," she said later. "I thought everyone else already knew how to do this, and I was the only one who didn't. I almost got up and left." She didn't leave. And that decision changed something important. By the end of the first week, Priya had completed her first basic stitch pattern. It was uneven and took her three attempts to finish. But when her trainer held it up and told her it was a solid beginning, she felt something she hadn't expected to feel in a training room — she felt seen. Over the following weeks, her work improved steadily. The stitches became more consistent. Her speed increased. She stopped waiting to be told what to do next and began anticipating the next step herself. By the fourth week, she was the one helping a newer trainee understand a technique she had struggled with herself just days before. On the day she completed her first full stitched piece — a small utility pouch made entirely from start to finish without guidance — she held it in both hands for a long time before saying anything. "I made this," she said. "I actually made this." She took her certificate home that day. She placed it on the wall where her family could see it. It was, she said, the first certificate she had ever received with her name on it. S-kala did not change Priya's life in a single day. It gave her a room, a trainer, a skill, and the unhurried space to discover what she was capable of. The rest, she did herself.
